Notes on the Berlioz Symphony
Berlioz composed his Symphony for Band in honor of Frenchmen killed in an uprising in 1830. This Symphony is one of the masterpieces of the band repertoire and Wagner, after having heard the composer’s Symphonie fantastique and the Romeo and Juliet, observed that it was the band symphony which convinced him of the genius of Berlioz. The symphony is in three movements: Marche funebre, Oraison funebre, Apotheose.
