“Auguries” refers to the ancient Roman practice of augury – the interpreting of the observed behavior of birds as omens of things to come. Two thousand years later, people possess proven scientific means of determining future outcomes from verified physical data, yet tend not to take heed in many instances. The ominous nature of this music suggests an admonition about the disastrous possibilities that can grow from ignoring actual warning signs. The abrupt ending of the piece offers no bright prospect. The warning stays in effect.
